Quick answer
Certificate of insurance verification compares the named insured, carriers, policy dates, coverage types, and limits with the requirements for a specific relationship. When the agreement requires policy wording, the review should also inspect the supporting endorsement instead of relying only on a certificate checkbox.
Start with the relationship rules
A certificate is not compliant by itself. It can only meet or miss the requirements set by a contract, lease, project, building, or company policy.
Checkmate attaches the applicable requirement set to the company before reviewing the documents. That keeps a general contractor from applying one generic checklist to every trade or a property manager from applying one tenant rule to every lease.
Check more than dates and limits
The certificate is the starting point. Some requirements depend on policy language that may appear in an endorsement or other supporting page.
- Named insured and certificate holder
- Coverage types and policy periods
- Per-occurrence and aggregate limits
- Primary and umbrella limit relationships
- Additional insured, waiver, and primary wording
- Missing or unreadable supporting evidence
Keep the person in control
Automated review can organize evidence and flag a gap quickly. It should not turn an insurance document into a guarantee of coverage.
Checkmate shows the source page for a finding and lets an authorized reviewer approve, request changes, or investigate an exception with the document in view.

Frequently asked questions
Is a COI proof of every required coverage term?
No. It summarizes policy information but does not amend the policy. Required wording may need to be confirmed in the policy or endorsement.
Can Checkmate read nonstandard certificates?
Checkmate accepts common ACORD forms and custom certificate formats, then presents extracted fields and findings for review.
What happens when a field cannot be confirmed?
The finding is shown as needing a check rather than being treated as compliant. A reviewer can inspect the source and decide what to request next.
